Summer 2016 Review!

As you may know, meteorologists like to look at the seasons a little differently than others. Since the "astronomical" seasons do not start and end on the same dates every year, we use "meteorological" seasons for the purpose of tidy record-keeping. There is also climatology to consider; the meteorological seasons line up nicely with the 3 hottest/coolest months of the year. So, "meteorological summer" is June, July and August.Under that premise, let's do a quick review of summer 2016.You may remember that we issued a summer forecast around Memorial Day. Have a look at it here.  That forecast called for the warmest summer since 2012, with a near-average amount of 90-degree days. It worked out pretty well! We are at 6 90+ days so far and I think there is a chance we squeeze out 1 or 2 more next week.Summer forecast:Click to EnlargeHere's what happened:Click to Enlarge Not bad. The core of the warmth was centered over our region and not New England but overall I would give this forecast, not only for us but the whole lower 48, an A-/B+.How did 2016 compare to recent history? It ended up being our hottest since 1995:Click to Enlarge August was particularly hot....the 6th warmest on record in Youngstown.Click to Enlarge On the precipitation-side, the summer of 2016 is an interesting one as well. Of course most had brown lawns for a good chunk of the season. The season will have a reputation as a dry one. Buttttt, the "official" numbers will tell a different story. Would you believe that summer 2016 will go in the record books as WETTER than average in Youngstown?? The airport (where the official observations are) logged a little over 13" of rain, compared to the historical average, roughly 11.5". It was our 5th consecutive wetter-than-average summer.Click to Enlarge But the airport was practically the wettest spot in our viewing area. Look at the rain anomalies and notice how the airport location stands out. Other areas were MUCH drier.Click to Enlarge We did make up some ground in August, especially north of 224.Click to Enlarge So Meteorological Fall is here. A transitional season in which we lose daylight rapidly and average high (and low) temperatures plummet quickly, especially during the second half of the season.Click to Enlarge We are expecting a warmer-than-average September. The season as a whole? Mild and probably on the dry side.

Wednesday (8/31) Morning Weather Briefing

GOOD MORNING!

Already it feels different out there this morning. Cooler but more humid and certainly cloudier than the last couple of mornings. At 8:45am, some showers and sprinkles were impacting areas north of I-80.Click to EnlargeA cold front is on the way and it will trigger additional showers this afternoon and early this evening. A thunderstorm is possible. Our hi-res 18 hour futurecast:Click to EnlargeIf you are planning on hitting the Canfield Fair or doing anything else outdoors today, here's the hourly breakdown of rain chances.Click to EnlargeCheck that StormTracker 21 app often! In the wake of the front, a taste of Autumn for the 1st day of September. Highs tomorrow only around 73-74 with a cool breeze. It may look like rain at times but I would not expect anything more than a sprinkle.Click to EnlargeClick to Enlarge

THEN....AMAZING WEATHER

Friday and the holiday weekend look spectacular. We may struggle with clouds for a while Friday morning but the day will end on a beautiful note and I expect to be able to count the clouds on one hand Saturday-Monday.Meanwhile, coastal areas of the Southeast will  be keeping a close eye on Hermine.Click to EnlargeA great pattern but a dry one. Nary a drop for about a week after today.Click to EnlargeLook for a big Summer review and September preview here on Thursday.

Blog: Severe Weather Possibilities Today

Good morning! We are going to just focus on today's weather in this morning's post. We have the chance for severe weather this afternoon and early this evening. So let's walk through the details.

SETUP

Obviously a moist, humid air mass is overhead this morning with dewpoint temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s.Click To EnlargeA cold front, albeit a very weak one, is slowly pushing east into this juicy air.Click To EnlargeWe also have some sunshine this morning, helping to make the air mass warm and a little more unstable. Temperatures should rise into the mid 80s today.Click To EnlargeAdditionally, we have a decent wind field in the lower levels of the atmosphere today. Winds 5,000 feet up will be around 40-60 mph this afternoon.Click To EnlargeThis is good and bad news. Good because storms that do fire will move along and not just park over one spot. Bad because storms can also "pull down" some of this wind energy in downdrafts and that raises the risk for damaging wind gusts. So, pretty decent setup. That's why the Storm Prediction Center has the region in the "Slight" risk for severe weather.Click To Enlargeunderstanding_categories

TIMING/IMPACTS

I think the "window" for strong to severe storms is in the mid and late afternoon hours.15 hour futurecast showing what the radar, generally, should look like: Click To EnlargeDamaging winds will, easily, be the #1 threat. Hail is possible, but severe hail (1" or larger)? Pretty unlikely.13925960_648224358664544_7499579447492523577_o 14054334_648281408658839_6718569035849199108_oNotice the very low tornado threat. Very low but not ZERO. There is a little twisting shown in some of the modeling this afternoon. The SPC has a 2% chance of a tornado within 25 miles of any spot.Click To Enlarge

STAY WEATHER AWARE

On any day that severe weather threatens, make sure you have at least 2 ways to get warnings. The Storm Tracker 21 app can alert you and you can track storms on the Interactive Radar.I will stream live on my Facebook Page if the situation warrants.Keep in mind that, unless a Tornado Warning is issued, we will not cover up Olympics coverage on TV with the map and the crawl (except during breaks). So social media/internet/mobile will be the best way to stay up to date.

Monday (8/15) Morning Weather Briefing

GOOD MORNING!

Some much-needed rain over the weekend and more in on the way today. Watching a complex of rain with thunder to our southwest this morning:Click to EnlargeThunderstorms are not all that likely here but it does look like we will get a period of steady rain during the midday and afternoon hours. Futurecast:hrrr_2016081510_ref_clevelandOur temperature rise will get short circuited by the rain so we should stay in the 70s today.

TUESDAY: STORMY?

A very weak cold front will limp across the Valley Tuesday and while it does not have much "punch" it will be a trigger for spotty thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.Click to EnlargeThe Storm Prediction Center has the region in a "Marginal" risk for severe weather. Meaning...a low chance but certainly not a "zero" chance.Click to Enlargeunderstanding_categories

REST OF WEEK

The rest of the work week will be quieter....just warm and humid. Low-end chances for showers and storms Wednesday-Friday. Juicy air mass but not much of a trigger.Click to EnlargeClick to Enlarge

PATTERN CHANGE

The pattern will finally feature a return of less humid air and more comfortable temperatures in about a week. After a Saturday that should be warm and dry, Sunday could be unsettled with a cold front swinging across:Click to EnlargeBehind that front, the models have been consistent in showing a stretch of weather that, while not "cool" will certainly be more comfortable than the first 3 weeks of August.Click to Enlarge

Thursday (8/11) Morning Weather Briefing

GOOD MORNING!

Well as of this writing it is 83 degrees with a dewpoint of 77 at my house. I don't remember moving to Key West.Another oppressive day today and even though this morning has featured some sunshine, I am expecting another active afternoon with showers and thunderstorms roaming around.15 hour futurecast:Click To EnlargeMuch like yesterday, localized flooding problems will be a concern as these storms will be fairly slow-movers. Some places could pick up a quick couple of inches of rain. These can also be prolific lightning producers.Otherwise, the HEAT is the story. Temperatures will climb into the upper 80s today and with dewpoints this high, the heat index can reach the upper 90s when it is not cloudy/raining.Click To EnlargeClick To EnlargeFriday will be fairly similar, in fact it may be a degree or two HOTTER. Also a breezier day....that will help move spotty afternoon storms along a little faster. The tradeoff? The risk of severe weather (hail/damaging winds) is somewhat higher. The Storm Prediction Center has a "marginal" risk area fairly close to us.Click To Enlargeunderstanding_categoriesThis will be close to Heat Advisory criteria for our region. NWS typically issues a Heat Advisory with heat index values are at or above 100.Click To Enlarge

THE WEEKEND

A cold front will hit the brakes as it moves over Ohio this weekend and the result will be an "unsettled" weekend. I don't think it rains every hour Saturday and Sunday, but it can rain anytime. With the steering winds parallel to the front, we could get some "training" of showers and storms, leading to possible flooding issues.Click To EnlargeClick To EnlargeKeeping in mind that places can get a couple of inches of rain in ONE thunderstorm, a GENERAL couple/few inches of rain is likely through Sunday night/Monday. Drought-denting for sure.Click To Enlarge

LONG RANGE

A more seasonable pattern next week and there are signs of a pretty comfortable stretch in the 8-14 day period.Click To Enlarge
